being at home.

An experienced architect and urban designer, I am inspired by those patterns and forms of living that are shared across cultures and time.

I work collaboratively with public and private clients, specialising in development strategy and communications, and the conservation and sustainable development of urban and ex-urban places. I also work on adaptions and development of individual homes. Central to my practice is the sensitive interpretation of site, context, constraints and requirements, which leads to resonant and proportionate concepts.  Beautiful results issue from understanding different histories, social, spatial and decorative traditions, along with the emotional response to form, material, gardens and light--and unification of these, as components of design.

The ambience and detail of each project reflect my clients’ practical needs, their cultural and aesthetic interest, as well as the nature and situation of each scheme. Working from the inside out I seek to revalue overlooked aspects of every project, uplifting the atmosphere, enhancing comfort, and making visible the hidden beauty of each place.  Rather than invent beauty, I aim to uncover it in each site I undertake.

I consult for local, national and international Government and non-Governmental organisations, including for UNESCO. I advise residential clients on the suitability of sites prior to acquisition, and later design, guiding the selection of layout, materials, systems and furniture, in order to balance competing demands and minimise project cost.  To realise successful outcomes I collaborate with talented architects, landscape architects, engineers, and other advisors including cabinet makers, project managers, and constructors.  Please find more information in “About”. Example projects appear under “Work”, including a section on planning and urban design, linked above.
